This is a very large fossil fish. It is a fine Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This impressive fossil herring is complete and has fine detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the entire fish is nicely displayed. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is beautifully showcased on the large plate of shale. And, remember, this fish is OVER FOURTEEN INCHES LONG! This is a fabulous, large example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
