Here is a very attractive specimen of Metasequoia occidentalis from the Eocene of Canada. This Dawn Redwood frond exhibits superb detail. The central shoot and opposite attachment of the individual leaflets are displayed in wonderful fashion. The frond is well showcased on the natural plate of shale. The dark-colored fossil has excellent contrast with the lighter-colored matrix. This is a very nice example of Metasequoia from the Tranquille Shale.
