Here is a very nice fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. This distinct fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed, and the fins and tail are well preserved. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the scale pattern is even preserved. The fossil has great dark color and contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fish is nicely showcased on the large, rectangular plate of shale. This is a very detailed example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
