This is a fine example of a rare fossil starfish. It is a large Euzonosoma tischbeinianum from the renowned Bundenbach slate of Germany. For many years, this slate was quarried for use in the roofing industry. Since the quarries have closed, the only way to acquire specimens is from old collections. This specimen IS from an old German collection. This specimen is wonderfully preserved - the individual plates of the arms are even clearly defined. The fossil has been replaced by iron pyrite or ''fool's gold'' and is beautifully displayed in the middle of the slate plate. The starfish has more detail preserved than most examples of this type. This is a very nice example of a rare and unusual starfish from one of the most famous fossil sites in the world.
