This is an excellent fossil leaf. It is a large Populus cinnamomoides leaf from the Eocene of Colorado. This long, lance-shaped leaf is wonderfully complete and exhibits outstanding detail. The dentate margins of the leaf are intact, and the venation of the leaf is just outstanding. Even the tertiary venation is very easily seen! A long petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. The dark-brown color of the leaf contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the natural plate of shale. This is a striking specimen of Populus cinnamomoides from the Green River Formation.
