Here is a rare fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is a killer Knightia alta from the Green River Shale. This type used to be referred to as a ''pregnant'' version of the common type of Knightia, but has now been found to be a different species entirely. This fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed, and the scales of the fish are very easily seen. The fish has great color and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The distinct fish is well showcased on the large plate of shale. This is a super, textbook example of this unusual fossil herring from the Eocene.
