This is a very nice fossil fish. It is a large Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and has good detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the overall shape is quite nice. The dark brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the large, rectangular plate of shale - ready for framing! This is a large, detailed example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
