This is a distinct specimen of Gogia spiralis from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This primitive echinoderm used to be known as an eocrinoid, but has now been re-classified as a cystoid. This cystoid is complete and exhibits wonderful detail. The elongate, multi-plated, sac-like holdfast is intact and well defined. The large-plated, nodose calyx is quite evident, and the twisted, spiraled arms are beautifully displayed in a widely splayed position. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is nicely presented on the squared plate of shale. This is a fine example of this classic Cambrian echinoderm.
