This is a very fine fossil fish. It is a large (over a foot long!) Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and has great detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - thebackbone of the fish is easily seen, and the upturned mouth adds a certain charm. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the large, squared, UNBROKEN plate of shale. This is an extremely nice, large example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
