This is a very nice slab of trace fossils. These are fossil bird tracks from the Eocene of Utah. It is very easy to picture a bird walking along the shoreline of an ancient lake, with the track-filled mud from the shoreline eventually turning to stone. There are five distinct tracks in this trackway - these tracks were probably made by a sandpiper-type bird. The tracks are clearly defined and well positioned on the large, natural plate of shale. Also, there are obvious ripple marks on the back side of the plate. This is a very fine specimen of a rare trackway of fossil bird tracks from the Green River Formation.
