Here is a fine specimen of a very rare cystoid. This is Calocystites jewetti from the Silurian of New York. This cystoid is extremely distinct for the type. It is very inflated and exhibits incredible detail. The highly ornamented plates are beautifully articulated. The ambulacra are quite evident, and two of the pore rhombs are easily seen. The lengthy stem is still tightly attached to the cystoid, which is unusual. The fossil has excellent color and contrast and is beautifully centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is one of the better examples of this scarce cystoid we have had. It is a very good example of this primitive echinoderm.
