This is a pair of large crinoid holdfasts (root systems) on a very large plate of limestone. The quarry where this specimen was found was filled with water. These holdfasts are well preserved and exhibit fine detail. The central stems are easily seen, and the roots seem to keep branching and branching - the rootlets seem to go on forever, right down to the very tiny tips. The holdfasts have very good color and contrast (better than the picture shows) and are well showcased on the large, squared matrix block that also contains many other fossils - brachiopods, bryoxoans, gastropods, etc. This is a top quality crinoid holdfast double preserved with many other Silurian fossils.
