This is an extremely rare fossil. It is a large Dragonfly from the Pennsylvanian of Missouri. This specimen was found at the site that is well known for fossil fern concretions - fossils other than ferns are rare and very sought-after. Occasionally, a wing or small insect is found, but a dragonfly with all four wings preserved is almost unheard of! The detail of the wings is simply amazing - the venation is very easily seen. The fossil is very 3-D and displays well in the large, oval concretion. Thousands of fern concretions are found before something this special is unearthed. And remember, this dragonfly is Pennsylvanian - 300 million years old - MUCH older than Solnhofen or Santana dragonflies! This is a truly incredible Paleozoic insect from the ''Coal Age'' of Missouri.
