HUGE, Spectacular Selenopeltis with Long Spines

Specimen SSA784

This is a very large spiny trilobite. It is a very displayable Selenopeltis buchii from the Ordovician Layers of Morocco. This specimen was acquired from the Richard Busch Collection, who originally acquired it from the famous Chance Collection. Busch was the Preparator/Asst. Curator at the North Museum in Lancaster, PA from 1965-1992. This trilobite was found in extremely dense sandstone - note the unusual texture of the matrix. The thick shell exoskeleton is well preserved and contrasts wonderfully with the sculpted matrix block. This amazing bug (almost 8 inches long!) is very 3-D and is aesthetically showcased on the large plate of sandstone. And the LONG spines are quite impressive and display very well - this is incredibly rare feature for this type of trilobite. This is one of the largest Selenopeltis buchii we have ever had, and it was once part of both the Chance and the Busch Collections.
