This is a very fine specimen of a rare Sassafras hesperia leaf from the Eocene of Canada. This unusual tri-lobed leaf is complete and exhibits wonderful detail. The margins of the leaf are clearly defined, and a long petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. This leaf is quite symmetrical for the type, and even the venation of the leaf can be seen. The dark brown color of the leaf contrasts well with the lighter-colored matrix. The leaf is beautifully displayed on the large plate of shale. This is a wonderful example of this highly uncommon leaf from the Tranquille Shale.
