Here is an amazing multiple plate of fossil sponges. These are Diagonella sp. from the Cambrian of Utah. Sponges are very uncommon in the fossil record, due to their delicate nature. Cambrian sponges apparently had skeletal nets that were weakly united - they generally required quiet water for preservation. There are twenty-five fine examples of this urn-shaped sponge on this plate, and many other small or partial specimens that we did not even count. The fossil sponges have very good color and excellent contrast. They are naturally spaced on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very collectible multiple plate of these uncommon Cambrian invertebrates.
