Here is a very rare Cambrian association. There is a Branchiocaris (phyllocarid), Margaretia (algae), and Asaphiscus (trilobite) fossilized together on this plate. The Burgess Shale is probably the only other place in the world where one could find a plate like this. Phyllocarids are among the lesser known crustaceans. They are distinguished by a rather large carapace, hinged at the top, which sheltered the anterior part of the body. This specimen has beautiful red coloration and contrasts wonderfully with the matrix. In the middle of the plate is the Margaretia algae. Under magnification, the detail of the algae is easily seen. Also on the plate is a ventrally-prepared Asaphiscus trilobite. This is unusual because Elrathia are much more common trilobites in this formation. This is a one-of-a-kind plate of Middle Cambrian organisms all preserved together.
