This is a large specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The fossil is a section of am actual ancient tree trunk. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very easily seen. Each ''diamond'' represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This section of bark is intact and extremely detailed. This is a very distinct section of a Lepidodendron tree from the Coal Age.
