Specimen SSCH5

This is an extremely rare invertebrate fossil. It is a fabulous Fuxianhuia protensa from the famous Chengjiang locality in China. This site is known worldwide for soft-body preservation of Lower Cambrian animals. The fauna is very similar to the Burgess Shale, but it is OLDER! Many one-of-a-kind organisms have been described exclusively from this formation.

Fuxianhuia is one of those Chengjiang organisms that you always see in books of the Chengjiang fauna, but never see examples in person. This animal is quite an enigma, Wikipedia states: " Its purportedly primitive features have led to its playing a pivotal role in discussions about the euarthropod stem group. Nevertheless, ... disputes about its morphology, in particular its head appendages, have made it one of the most controversial of the Chengjiang taxa,...'' This specimen is complete down to the long telson, which is an extremely complete example for this type.. The definitive structure of this animal is clearly defined. The organism is very well preserved on the large, natural, unbroken block of shale. This is an extremely collectible example of thisstrange organism from one of the most famous invertebrate fossil localities in the world.
