This is a very interesting fossil sponge. It is an Astylospongia inciso-lobata from the Silurian of Tennessee. The rounded sponge is totally free of matrix and can be viewed from all angles. This specimen is quite large for the type and has better detail than most examples of this sponge. This sponge is very 3-dimensional and exhibits excellent shape and form. This is an extremely nice specimen of this very old sponge.
