This is simply one of the most sought-after trilobites in the world. It is a spectacular Sphaerocoryphe robusta from the famous Walcott-Rust Quarry near Trenton Falls, New York. The Walcott-Rust Quarry (WRQ) is one of the most famous and important trilobite localities in the world. Recently, scientists declared the quarry as “the single richest and most varied source of trilobites in the New York Trenton Group limestones and perhaps in the entire suite of New York Paleozoic rocks.” This type is one of the original trilobites that Charles Walcott and James Hall made famous over a century ago! The Harvard WRQ website describes Sphaerocoryphe robusta as such: "Sphaerocoryphe robusta is found on only one bedding plane in one location, the Walcott-Rust Quarry. This is probably due to its very small size and low concentrations, requiring a significant area to be searched to be successful." How rare is it? Again, Sphaerocoryphe robusta is found on only one bedding plane in one location, the Walcott-Rust Quarry! Could it be rarer? This specimen is wonderfully prone, with the classic bulbous nose fully intact. The bug has excellent detail preserved, is very well articulated, and is also extremely inflated and 3-D. The trilobite is very well displayed on the rectangular limestone plate that also contains a very large segment from a would-have-been-six-inch Isotelus gigas. Anyone who knows anything about the history of US trilobites knows how ultra-rare and important a Sphaerocoryphe robusta is - it is the ultimate trilobite found at this locality and, some would argue, the most collectible trilobite found in the United States.
