This is an excellent fossil sponge, Diagonella sp., from the Marjum Formation of Utah. This type of sponge has also been found in the famous Burgess Shale deposits. Sponges are fairly uncommon in the fossil record. Cambrian sponges apparently had skeletal nets that were weakly united and generally required quiet water for preservation. This specimen is quite large for the type, and the urn-shaped form of the sponge is very distinct. The fossil has excellent color and contrast and is wonderfully displayed on the squared plate of shale. There are also several partial Agnostid trilobites resting on top of the sponge. This is a beautiful example of a fossil sponge from the Cambrian.
