Here is a great fossil sponge. This is Diagonella sp. from the Marjum Formation of Utah. This type of sponge has also been found in the famous Burgess Shale deposits. Sponges are fairly uncommon in the fossil record. Cambrian sponges apparently had skeletal nets that were weakly united and generally required quiet water for preservation. This urn-shaped sponge is quite large for the type and exhibits fine detail. Under magnification, even the spicules of the sponge can be seen. The fossil has outstanding color and contrast and is nicely presented on the plate of shale matrix. This is an excellent fossil sponge from the Middle Cambrian.
