Here is a very good specimen of a primitive echinoderm. This is Pleurocystites squamosus from the Ordovician layers of Ontario, Canada. The theca of this cystoid has good shape. The large plates defining the border are nicely articulated. Almost all of the rapidly-tapering stem is intact and tightly attached to the theca. One of the arms is partially present and the other arm is wonderfully displayed. The cream-colored fossil contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. It is well positioned on the semi-rectangular plate of limestone. This is a fine example of this unusual Ordovician echinoderm.
