Here is a nice plate of fossil sponges. These are Diagonella sp. from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This type of sponge has also been found in the famous Burgess Shale deposits. Sponges are fairly uncommon in the fossil record. Cambrian sponges apparently had skeletal nets that were weakly united and generally required quiet water for preservation. There are several examples of this urn-shaped sponge on the plate. The fossil sponges have good color and excellent contrast. They are wonderfully presented on the squared plate of shale. This is a very intriguing multiple plate of sponges from the Marjum Formation.
