This is simply an incredible fossil shark tooth. It is a huge Carcharocles megalodon (Extinct Giant White Shark) tooth from the Atacama Desert of Chile. This specimen is extremely large - six and a quarter inches long! The tooth is naturally embedded in a large block of solid, pebbled sandstone. But the truly amazing feature of this tooth is the distinct pathologic growth pattern on the edges of the tooth. The normally uniform serrated edges of the tooth grew in an undulating, ''ruffled'' pattern! The wavy, ''zig-zag'' margins of this tooth are an extremely rare occurrence in the fossil record - only a handful of shark teeth have ever been found with this unique pathologic distortion preserved! And, wow, just look at those serrations! Not only is this a HUGE fossil shark tooth, preserved in a solid block of rock, it is a special, one-of-a-kind specimen showcasing unique pathologic growth in Miocene-age sharks.
