Here is a great specimen of Lituites littuus from the Ordovician of China. This ''strange'' nautiloid starts growing in a coiling pattern and then straightens out. This cephalopod is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail - the inner whorls of the coiled portion are clearly defined. The primitive, straight-line sutures are quite evident and the individual body chambers are easily seen. The specimen has excellent grayish-white color and contrasts well with the reddish-brown matrix. It is nicely centered on the rectangular block of matrix that has been semi-polished to make it more attractive. This is a very aesthetic specimen of this unusual semi-coiled nautiloid.
