This is a great specimen of Ordovician gastropods. These are Maclurites sp. from the Galena Formation of Minnesota. There are two large examples of this unusual gastropod on the plate. This type of gastropod coils in such a pattern that all the whorls are visible on the flat lower side. The fossil snails are extremely 3-dimensional, and the coiling pattern is easily seen. The fossils display beautifully on the large block of matrix. And best of all, these gastropods are totally natural to the plate - they have not been composited. This is an extremely displayable slab of these Paleozoic gastropods.
