This is an excellent specimen of Acer lesquereuxi, a true maple. This leaf is from the Green River Formation of Utah. Maple leaves are very uncommon from this site. This specimen should not be confused with the more common Platanus, or Sycamore. All five lobes of the leaf are present. The fine venation is easily seen. The leaf has the entire stem (petiole) preserved down to the branch attachment point. The coloring of the leaf is fully natural, and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The leaf is nicely centered on the natural matrix block. This is a very collectible specimen of an unusual fossil leaf from the Eocene.
