Here is an extremely rare fossil. This is a primitive echinoderm, Camptostroma roddyi, from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Camptostroma is one of the earliest known types of echinoderms. Found in the Lower Cambrian, this Medusa-like animal had a very distinct plate structure. This unusual fossil has good form and, under magnification, some of the plate structure is defined. Both part and counterpart (not pictured) of this scarce fossil are present. The orange-red fossil contrasts well with the lighter-colored matrix. There is also an Olenellus cephalon preserved on the plate, showing that the fossil is indeed Lower Cambrian in age. This is a great example of a very unusual echinoderm from the early part of the fossil record.
