Here is a very uncommon leaf from the Green River Formation of Utah. This is an excellent specimen of Styrax transversa. The leaf is complete and exhibits wonderful detail. The long, attenuate tip of the leaf is nicely displayed. The coarsely serrated margins of the leaf are quite evident. The short petiole is still attached to the leaf. The dark brown fossil leaf contrasts nicely with the grayish matrix. The leaf is almost perfectly centered on the rectangular plate of oil shale. This is a beautiful specimen of this rare fossil leaf from the Eocene of Utah.
