Here is a very pretty specimen of a rare fossil fish from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Amphiplaga bracyptera from the Green River Formation. Only a handful of these fish are found each year. This specimen exhibits wonderful detail. The bone structure is superb and the eye socket is easily seen. The fins are complete and the open mouth is nicely displayed. The fish has great orangish-brown color and contrasts extremely well with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is almost perfectly centered on the large, rectangular plate of matrix. This is an excellent specimen of this rare fossil fish.
