Here is a very attractive fossil starfish. This is Urasterella asperula from the Devonian of Germany. Since the quarries in this area have stopped producing roofing slate, the only way to obtain specimens from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This specimen was recently acquired from an old German collection. This specimen is nicely inflated and exhibits wonderful detail. The plate structure of the echinoderm is clearly defined and even the tube feet of the animal can be seen. Let the pictures do the talking. The starfish is almost perfectly centered on the large rectangular plate of slate. This is a very ''crisp'' example of a starfish from this unusual moment in time.
