Here is a nice plate of fossil sponges. These are Diagonella sp. from the Cambrian of Utah. Sponges are fairly uncommon in the fossil record. Cambrian sponges apparently had skeletal nets that were weakly united. They generally required quiet water for preservation. There are several examples of this urn-shaped sponge on this plate. The fossil sponges have good color and excellent contrast. They are nicely positioned on the squared plate of shale. This is a very intriguing multiple plate of these strange invertebrate animals.
