Here is a very impressive vertebrate fossil. It is a complete skull of an extremely rare type of oreodont known as Eporeodon major. This wonderful specimen is from the Oligocene of South Dakota. This oreodont skull is well preserved and exhibits extraordinary detail. The skull is very 3-dimensional and shows hardly any distortion. The lower jaws are present and well articulated. The teeth are intact and beautifully displayed. On the top of the skull is an unusual bite mark from an unknown carnivore and along the orbit of the eye are several marks made by a gnawing rodent! This large skull is nicely positioned on the sculpted block of matrix that also contains five articulated vertebra and several other bones. This is a very displayable specimen of this scarce oreodont from the Brule Formation. It is sure to be a highlight of any collection.
