Here is an extremely rare fossil. This is Palaeololigo oblonga, a fossil squid, from the famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. Squid are extremely rare in the fossil record, perhaps due to the absence of hard parts which are more easily fossilized than soft tissue. This fossil cephalopod exhibits fine detail. The phragmacone and soft body tissue are very nicely displayed - even the tentacles are preserved. This fossil squid is easily seen on the large, plate of lithographic limestone that is edged with many pyrolusite dendrites. The thin line that appears to be a crack is actually a natural, healed fracture in the rock. This is a fine specimen of an extremely unusual fossil cephalopod.
