This is a gorgeous fossil crab. It is a Neptunus granulatus from the Miocene of Sardinia, Italy. This crab is very 3-dimensional and extremely well preserved. This type of crab has a somewhat oval carapace with sharp points that project laterally. And did we mention the pincers of the beast? The large claws are both intact and have been exquisitely prepared in a free-standing manner! Even the large plates on the underside of the carapace are quite distinct. The fossil has great color and contrast and is wonderfully perched on the natural block of matrix. This is an excellent fossil crab that simply displays beautifully.
