Here is an excellent specimen of Quercus cuneatus, an oak leaf, from the Eocene of Utah. Oak leaves are very uncommon from this site. This leaf exhibits the distinctive lobed margins typical of the species. The slender petiole is still attached to the leaf. The fossil plant has fantastic, dark coloration and contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. It is well positioned on the natural plate of shale. There is also a very fine fossil insect on the slab. This snout beetle exhibits fine detail. Under magnification, the reticulation of the wing covers is quite evident. This is a great specimen of a collectible oak leaf from the Green River Formation with a nice insect on the same plate.
