Here is a fantastic specimen of an extremely rare cystoid. This is Callocystites jewetti from the Silurian of New York. This cystoid is quite large for the type. It is very inflated and exhibits incredible detail. The highly ornamented plates are beautifully articulated. The ambulacra are quite evident, and two of the pore rhombs are easily seen. The lengthy stem is still tightly attached to the cystoid - which is very unusual. The fossil has excellent color and contrast and is beautifully displayed on the rectangular plate of shale. This is, perhaps, the finest single example of this scarce cystoid we have ever seen. It is a spectacular and highly displayable example of this primitive echinoderm.
