This is an unusual fossil invertebrate. It is a Chancelloria pentacta from the Cambrian of Utah. This type of animal is sort of an enigma, and has been found in the Burgess Shale fauna. It was first thought to be a "glass sponge", but it has now been described as a "coeloscleritophoran". This fossil has excellent form and exhibits wonderful detail - the star-shaped sclerites are clearly defined. The natural, orangish-brown coloration of the fossil contrasts well with the tannish-gray matrix. The fossil is nicely presented on the somewhat rectangular plate of shale. This is a fine example of this odd Cambrian animal.
