Here is a nice plate of two fossil fish. These are Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. The larger fossil herring is complete and preserves fine detail. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen and the fins are nicely displayed. The dark brown fish contrast wonderfully with the cream-colored matrix. They are well presented on the oval plate of shale. This is a fine fish plate from the Green River Formation.
