Here is a nice specimen of Bactrocrinus jaekeli from the famous Devonian slate of Germany. The quarries in this area produced slate for the roofing industry for many years. Now the quarries are closed and the only way to obtain the rare fossils from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This piece was recently obtained from an old German collection. This type of inadunate crinoid has a very small cup with long, thin, uniserial arms that branch several times. This crinoid exhibits these features in fine fashion. The multi-plated anal sac is nicely displayed between the arms. Sections of the stem, with some cirri preserved, are still intact. The crinoid is beautifully centered on the large, rectangular plate of roofing slate that also contains a cephalon of Chotecops, the famous Devonian trilobite from this site. This is a very interesting echinoderm from a world-famous fossil locality.
